is one of the departments and centers of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Khartoum. The department of Linguistics was established in 1970 due to a recommendation from Professor Abdalla Altieb who was the dean of the Faculty of Arts, to the University Vice chancellor at that time. The first head of the department was Professor Tamam Hasaan.
At the same date of establishment the program of Masters in Linguistics by courses began and went on for two years.
Some of the academic additions in the Linguistics department are:

  • Masters in Linguistics by research, as well as PhD in Linguistics in 1993.
  • Modifications of the syllabus taught at the linguistics department and development of its programs in the period of using the hours system.
  • Modifications of the syllabus taught at the linguistics department and development of its programs in the period of using the semester's system.
    The Department has 2 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 1 fellow and 2 teaching assistants.

Department of German

was established in 1990, as a part of the Faculty of Arts. It is located in the western compound of the faculty at Othman Digna Street. The Department of German offers the B.A programme which lasts four years, as well as the B.A honors programme which lasts five years. The department has currently one associate professor, four lecturers, among which one PhD candidate, three teaching assistants, all of them are doing their postgraduate studies in Germany to obtain the master degree. The department is also committed to serve the society, it provides an excellent certified translation service from and to the German language in arrangement with the Translation and Arabicization Unit of Faculty of Arts. The Department of German has a very good and ever developing releations with the German academic exchange service (DAAD) and the German Cultural Center (Goethe Institu).
